Public Records Request

Public Records & Reports

The City of Chowchilla is committed to transparency and open government.

Under the California Public Records Act (CPRA), Government Code 6250 et seq., members of the public have the right to access public records maintained by state and local agencies in the normal course of business. Certain records may be exempt from disclosure under the law.

To improve efficiency, tracking, and communication, the City now uses NextRequest, an online public records request system.

Submit a Public Records Request

All public records requests should be submitted through NextRequest. This system allows you to:

• Submit new public records requests online
• Upload supporting documents if needed
• Communicate directly with City staff
• Track the status of your request in real time
• View responsive records when they are available

Using NextRequest helps ensure requests are processed accurately, consistently, and in compliance with state law.

What Is a Public Record

Public records include writings, emails, reports, photographs, maps, and other materials prepared, owned, used, or retained by the City related to the conduct of public business.

Some records may be partially or fully exempt from disclosure under state or federal law. If a record or portion of a record is exempt, the City will provide an explanation consistent with CPRA requirements.

Response Time

The City will determine whether responsive records exist within 10 calendar days of receiving a request, as required by law. If additional time is needed, the requester will be notified in writing.

Previously Released Records and Reports

Some commonly requested records, reports, agendas, and meeting materials may already be available on the City website and may not require a formal public records request.
